The archaeological site of Knossos is sited 5 km southeast of the city of Iraklion. Between 1.700-1.450 BC, the Minoan civilisation was at its peak and Knossos was the most important city-state.
Get a guide or you will understand less than the half of the Knossos palace. It is a shame that most of it is rebuilt and you do not understand what is real and what is not but it is worth the visit!
It's of those places where you experience the feeling of awe, grandiose. 'Tis amazing how old and labyrinthine the grounds you walk on. Archaeological museum in Irakleio is a must introduction tho.
