Outside JR Azuchi station is an old sumo (Japanese wrestling) ring. You may not know this, but Azuchi castle town was the birthplace of sumo. Although origins of sumo can be traced back to religious rituals, Nobunaga is believed to have organized the first official sumo competitions here in Azuchi.
