Construit initialement par Arnaud d'Isembourg, prince-évêque de Trèves au XIIe siècle, le château est détruit par les armées de Louis XIV en 1689.
Offert au prince héritier de Prusse, futur Frédérric-Guillaume IV (1795-1861), il est entièrement reconstruit en style néo-gothique et terminé en 1842.
