Excavations by the University of Tennessee Chattanooga reached 1.8m of the silt. The importance of the Archaic Period artifacts prompted the Smithsonian Institution and National Geographic to continue excavations reaching down to 9.8m in depth. The artifacts uncovered, published by National Geographic, brought renown to the site and led to its establishment as a National Monument in 1961.
