Remains of a Roman fort, Norfolk በ Baz Richardson (now away until 1st July)

This is the site of one of several Saxon shore forts constructed by the Romans around the 3rd century AD, to hold cavalry as a defence against Saxon raids up the rivers of the east and south coasts of southern Britain. It is located at Burgh Castle in Norfolk on the summit of ground sloping steeply towards the estuary of the River Waveney. The fort was possibly known as Gariannonum. Between the mid-7th and 9th centuries the site was possibly occupied by a monastic settlement, and in the 11th and 12th centuries a Norman motte and bailey castle existed on the site. In the distance can be seen the 71 feet tall Berney Arms Drainage Mill, which is the tallest drainage windmill in Norfolk. Dating from 1865, it was originally used to grind cement clinker which had been fired in nearby kilns using local chalk and clay. In 1883 the windmill was converted to work the drainage scoop to drain the marshlands. It closed in 1948 when electric pumps took over that role. The windmill is a Scheduled Ancient Monument under the care of English Heritage.
